Avengers Vs. X-Men: War of the Phoenix

Greeting again, faithful readers! Apologies for the later than usual post (Finals Week Fever, you know), but I intend to make up for this dereliction of duty by sharing with you all the savory details concerning the recently announced first major Marvel Event of 2012; The Avengers Vs. The X-Men.

That's right. The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes Vs. The X-Men, the mutant's powerhouse team.

While the majority of the specifics concerning this ground breaking and status quo shattering event are being kept firmly under wraps, Marvel has released a few plot points to set the stage for this war of the super teams. Make no mistake my friends, with Marvel enlisting the likes of Jason Aaron, Ed Brubaker, Brian Michael Bendis, Johnathan Hickman, and Matt Fraction to pen this universe wide event, this war will no doubt be something truly special.

According the the event's writers the impetus for this clash of titans is the deadly cosmic being known only as The Phoenix Force, and it's imminent return to Earth. For those unfamiliar with the Phoenix Force, it is a cosmic being of nigh unlimited power in the Marvel Universe that resided for a time in the psyche of the now deceased X-Man (and former wife of Cyclops) Jean Grey. This creature has been off planet for a number of years in the Marvel U, after being defeated by the X-Men when they made the heart wrenching decision to sacrifice Jean Grey in order to "slay" the Phoenix Force while it was in control of Jean  and going by the moniker of "The Dark Phoenix". Now it appears this god-like mass of power is coming home, and is looking for a new host to inhabit as it once had with Jean. It is this decision of who should be made the host of the phoenix that divides the Avengers and the X-Men, though why and in what way remains unclear.

It has also been announced that Hope, the first mutant born since the events of the mutant decimation (for more on M-Day, click here) is to be a central player in this conflict. With her background including her adopted father Cable being the son of Cyclops and Jean Grey, her penchant for wearing a strikingly similar outfit to Jean's when she was the Phoenix, her habit of occasionally being surrounded by a VERY phoenix shaped fire, as well as her familiar red hair and striking green eyes (not unlike a certain former X-Man), Hope has been keeping fans guessing as to her ties to Jean and the Phoenix Force since her birth. It appears these questions will be answered in Avengers Vs. X-Men, as well as the reason behind the recent resurrection of the Avenger and M-Day instigator The Scarlet Witch.

Marvel is also revealing that this event is most definitely nothing short of an all out war, with Cyclops of the X-Men and Captain America of the Avengers taking on the roles of Generals for their respective forces. The events writers held a Live Announcement via the website Livestream to talk about the general idea behind this story as well as answer a few fan questions about the war to come. Fortunately the folks at Marvel were kind enough to post the entire airing after they were done the stream for anyone not able to catch it the first time around, which you can view here: Marvel Press Conference: Avengers Vs X-Men Event.

It all kicks off in April with the release of Avengers Vs. X-Men Issue 0 which will show how the Scarlet Witch and Hope got to where they currently are, and what roles they are to play in the conflict to come.  I don't know about all of you, but just the premise of this event is enough to keep me on the edge of my seat until April, let alone the superb team of writers and artists Marvel has assembled to make this super team death match a reality.

If you really want to get a head start on the action, i would seriously suggest getting a hold of The Avengers: X Sanction event coming up this month concerning the mysterious reappearance of the long thought dead Cable, and his shadowy mission to exterminate the Avengers within a 24 hour timeframe. Apparently this story is a direct set up for 2012's Avengers Vs. X-Men, with Cable seemingly trying to prevent the conflict itself from occurring by eliminating The Avengers from the picture entirely. What this plan means to prevent remains a mystery, and what could be so severe as to justify such actions from long time hero Cable should leave many readers scratching their heads.

Well that's all for now, ladies and gentlemen! Like I said before, if you want to get in on the action from the start, keep an eye out for the X Sanction limited series this month and Avengers Vs. X-Men Issue 0 this April. Until next time, keep on reading!

Enroll In Gerard Way's "Umbrella Academy"!

Greetings once again fellow netizens! Today's post is a bit of a departure from my normal assortment of previews, reviews, and suggestions; mainly because it isn't published by Marvel or DC, but also because this particular series showcases the questionable and often avoided waters of cross-media comic writers.  By cross-media I of course refer to individuals who write in one particular medium and then try to write in a different medium (like film, comics, novels, screenplays, games etc.). These types of ventures seem to be more rare in the comic industry then most others, and the results are often hotly contested or less than huge successes.

This brings us to the series I wish to share with you today called The Umbrella Academy, a publication by Dark Horse Comics and the brain child of artist Gabriel Ba and writer Gerard Way.  If Gerard Way's name rings a faint bell that may be because Mr. Way is generally better known for his association with his rock band My Chemical Romance, the Gold and Platinum record selling band most famous for their hugely successful concept album called The Black Parade.  Now while Mr. Way and the rest of MCR have proven themselves more than capable artists, the prospect of Gerard's foray into the world of comics was both celebrated by his loyal fans and loathed by most every else.  Well fortunately for us Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba rewarded the loyalty of their supporters and embarrassed their naysayers by creating and selling one of the most original and strangely captivating offerings in the industry (and I'm including Marvel and DC in that statement).

In The Umbrella Academy, Way and Ba tell the strange and wonderfully absurd tale of seven super powered children who were born under strange circumstances and adopted by the mysterious and powerful entrepreneur Sir Reginald Hargreeves, otherwise known as "The Monocle".  The story is as strange as it is delightful with spaceships, aliens, super heroes, French zombie robots, and other things so outrageously  odd that one has to see (and read) it all to fully appreciate.  Gabriel Ba does an absolutely stellar job in bringing to life the world of Way's darkly whimsy tales, and gives the series an visual aesthetic akin to Alan Moore series like "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" and "Watchmen". This team strikes the strangest chord, and I admittedly can't imagine anyone finding this series (at the very least) not captivating to look at.  The series has had two series run so far, the first collected together with the subtitle "The Apocalypse Suite" and the second with the subtitle "Dallas". While Gerard Way had announced the subtitle of the upcoming third run for the series as "Hotel Oblivion" at the San Diego Comic-Con in 2009 the series has yet to hit shelves, with Dark Horse Comics originally slating the run for a summer 2010 release but later retracting the claim with no new date at which to expect the release.

So while we wait for the third ride of the Umbrella Academy, take my word for it and do yourself a favor by going out and purchasing this excellent (and 2008 Eisner Award winning) series in it's collected forms.  You'll not regret the purchase; I'll stake my non-existent blogging reputation on it! So what are you waiting for? Go enroll today!

Until the next!

Comical Holidays: Gifts with a Comic Heart

Hello again everyone! I hope everyone has had a safe and happy holiday weekend, and taken advantage of some of the amazing sales that have been flouting around the net and stores nationwide.  I though that I'd help out some of you late or frustrated shoppers and show some different avenues to consider and gifts for some different people in your circle of friends and family.

So to start off, here is a nice little list of some places to check out for some good sales and back catalogs:

1. Amazon

2. Marvel Online Shop

3. WBshop for DC Comics

4. Midtown Comics Online Store

5. Boom Studios Online Store

Now that we have some links and stores to check out, I think it only fair to put a few tips out for those of us shopping both with and without a strong understanding of comics or the way the industry sells them. So here is a little guide of things to consider:

- If you're looking for a specific story or character, you should probably aim more towards what are referred to as Trade Paper Backs (or TPB for short). These usually collect full arcs within an ongoing series so the reader can enjoy the arc all together, so finding a specific story is a lot easier as these act as collected volumes.

- If you're looking for a larger/complete story arc or potentially a large scale event you may want to look at an grabbing up an Omnibus. An Omnibus can consist of more story arcs than a normal TPB or even an entire series print run, so catching up on a large amount of material or getting a more substantial collection of stories are much easier to compile.

Now that we have all the official business out of the way, here is the fun part; here are some of my personal recommendations for good stories and excellent comics, as well as a few other things to tickle your comic loving funny bone. (I will make each series a link to a wikipedia page so you can decide if the comic is right for you, and if you find it is then scroll up and hit up those sellers!)

Current Series to Check Out:

1. Venom

2. Amazing Spider-Man

3. Wolverine

4. Captain America

5. Daken: Dark Wolverine

6. F.F. (Future Foundation)

Classic Series to Check Out:

1. Akira

2. Transmetropolitan

3. Watchmen

4. League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

5. V for Vendetta

6. The Umbrella Academy

These should definitely get you started, but there is so much out there that the only way to see it is to get out there and check it out! So good luck, and happy hunting!

Kaine: A Study In Scarlet

Greeting once again fellow comic fans and other perusers of the internet! This week I decided to cover an upcoming new series from Marvel that appears to have the makings of a hit, the forth coming THE SCARLET SPIDER.  You may remember seeing a teaser and a mention of The Scarlet Spider in a previous post about what is coming up for Marvel in 2012, but after considering the series' chosen protagonist and some confusion many people might have about him I though it would be a good idea to offer a little bit up back story to the uninitiated. So for your entertainment and edification, let me introduce you to the man behind the new mask... Kaine.

*WARNING: THE FOLLOWING MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS INVOLVING SPIDER-MAN. READ AT YOUR DISCRETION*

Kaine first came into being at the hands of The Jackal, a mad biochemist named Dr. Miles Warren obsessed with Spider-Man and all things cloning.  If you read much of Spider-Man in the early-to-mid Nineties, you may be aware of some of Kaine and The Jackal's exploits, as it was during this time that the now fairly infamous Clone Saga occurred in Spider-Man's corner of the Marvel U that resulted in Kaine's 'birth'. During this time The Jackal was experimenting with creating a clone of Peter Parker (who he knew to be Spider-Man), the first successful attempt being Kaine. While Kaine was intended to be an exact clone of Parker the inherent flaws of the cloning process eventually disfigured Kaine to the point that The Jackal deemed him a failure, despite the fact that Kaine continued to become physically larger and more powerful than his progenitor Spider-Man.  After The Jackal deemed Kaine a loss and decided to destroy him, Kaine fled from The Jackal and went into hiding until The Jackal later launched an assault on Spider-Man using the newly made successful clone that would go on to be the first Scarlet Spider Ben Reilly.

The events that spun (no pun intended) out of this clash of clones are what comprised the bulk of the Clone Saga, and while I would like to explain the entire saga that would take a small novel to adequately make sense of. So to give you the important bullet points:

1. Peter Parker and Ben Reilly, while at odds at first, eventually became close friends and considered each other brothers until Ben's death.

2. For a period of time, Peter thought he was the clone and Ben believed himself to be the original.

3. Kaine developed a love/hate relationship with  Parker and Reilly, mostly due to the previously stated confusion, and often went out of his way to help Parker (who he thought to be a fellow clone) and harm Ben Reilly (who he believed to be the original of the three and partially to blame for his suffering).

Eventually all of the Clone Saga business was sorted out, but the result of all this clone confusion was a small period of time in which Ben Reilly adopted the identity of The Scarlet Spider while Peter took some time off to reassess his life as Spider-Man. During this time, Kaine continually stalks his 'brother', causing problems and chaos for him whenever possible until he finally strikes a tenuous peace with Ben shortly before his death.

At this point Kaine reveals that the cellular degeneration that caused his disfigurement is actually killing him, and briefly hands himself over to authorities for his actions against Ben and accepts his situation. After discovering that the events of the Clone Saga were in fact backed and indirectly caused by Spider-Man villain Norman Osborn (The first Green Goblin), Kaine decides to use an opportune mass escape from the super villain prison The Raft to disappear into the shadows of the Marvel U to exact revenge on Osborn.

For a while after his prison escape, Kaine did not appear in Spider-Man titles or any other Marvel series until his unexpected return in The Amazing Spider-Man #608.  Kaine tells Spider-Man in a brief tussle that he has been tracking down a former associate of Ben Reilly named Damon Ryder, a.k.a Raptor, the last few months because he believes that he may hold the key to fixing Kaine's ever increasing cellular damage. While Kaine initially uses Raptor's hate of Ben Reilly by identifying Spider-Man as his clone, Raptor later confesses after he is defeated by Spider-Man that he never had the means to heal Kaine.  Kaine does not take this well, and seemingly chokes Raptor to death.

Kaine is not seen again until the events of The Grim Hunt, in which the family of the deceased villain Kraven the Hunter attempts to hunt down all spider powered individuals to exact revenge on Spider-Man and resurrect Kraven himself. While Kaine avoids capture and tells Spider-Man that running from the hunters is the best option, Peter chastises him for his cowardice and his willingness to leave the other spider-powered heroes already captured in the hands of the hunters. In the end it is revealed that the hunters, who believed they had caught Spider-Man and sacrificed him in a ritual to bring back Kraven, had actually sacrificed Kaine in Peter's costume. Kaine had followed Peter to the home of the hunters and knocked him out, using the opportunity to selflessly switch places with him and seemingly die at the hands of the hunters.

Despite Kaine finding relief and a small amount of redemption in his sacrifice, the Marvel U fates seemed to have other plans.  After Peter puts together a burial for Kaine and lays him to rest next to his 'brother' Ben, The Jackal again appears and uses his knowledge of Kaine's physiology to bring him back from the dead, mutate his cellular degeneration into further drastic physical changes, and force the advancement of his spider powers even farther than before. Kaine was then called Tarantula by The Jackal and appeared to be under his influence or control, and acted as his bodyguard up until the climax of the recent Spider-Island event .

It was during the climax of the Spider-Island event that Kaine came into contact with a large dose of the vaccine that was developed to cure the spider-virus The Jackal had been hired to make by The villainess The Queen. The vaccine not only returned Kaine to a human form, but also left him cured of his cellular degeneration and the disfigurement it had caused him throughout his life. After borrowing a suit from Spider-Man and helping him and the other Marvel heroes defeat the Queen, Kaine informed Peter that he planned to take advantage of what he saw as a second chance at a better life and leave New York to make a life for himself.

This journey to forge a better life is the story Marvel's new run The Scarlet Spider aims to tell, but if Kaine's life has taught him anything it's that nothing he does is ever easy.  Between battling villains old and new Kaine will have to fight the murderous compulsions that have defined him most of his life, and attempt to become what he has never been before; his own man. The new trails and tribulations of Kaine as The Scarlet Spider begin in January 2012, and from the looks of things readers and Kaine are both in for one thriller of a ride.

That's all for now everyone! Until next time, keep reading!

Marvel's 2012

Greetings ands salutations dear reader! I just got through reading a VERY special Marvel release, and now have come to you all to share some of the biggest Marvel news of the year!

With the release of Marvel's POINT ONE issue (not to be confused with the company's Point One Initiative), Marvel has given some intense previews of what they are labeling their 'Foundation of 2012'.  After the releases of a handful of teaser images online, Marvel has presented the core of what appears to be a year chock full of magnificent and compelling stories. Here for your ogling and enjoyment are the five teasers:

These five teasers correspond with the five stories contained within POINT ONE, which introduces two Universe wide level events, the return of one the cosmic super hero Nova (seen in the fifth teaser), and THREE new ongoing series! I'll keep story specifics to a minimum, but 2012 seems to stand on the five foundation pillars of Nova, the new Defenders, the return of Scarlet Spider, the brand new AGE OF APOCALYPSE based team X-Terminated, and the rise of the AGE OF ULTRON.

Want to know more? Then get out to your local comic vendors and snap up Marvel's POINT ONE!

....Alright, I MAY have one or two other little piece of news regarding Marvel comics in 2012. First off is the return of this one guy you might know by the name of.... CABLE. That's right ladies and gentlemen, the time-traveling son of the X-Man Cyclops and the adopted father of the mutant messiah Hope is back. And guess who he appears to be interested in taking down?

That's right. CABLE vs. THE AVENGERS. The Avengers are in trouble.

Well I'll close with the last piece of news, since I don't really think their is anything I could say that isn't instantly said by this teaser. It's the center of 2012, and....

Carnage: Madness Returns to Marvel U

For those fans of the darker corners of the Marvel Universe, the word Symbiote should be a well known one. The most recognizable alien Symbiote to the uninitiated is unquestionably the arch villain of the Amazing Spider-Man, the notorious Venom.  While Venom is still one of most dangerous enemys in Spider-Man's Rogues Gallery, he is far from the most dangerous Symbiote. That honor goes to Cletus Kasady, a psychotic serial killer of the worst variety who acts as host to Venom's first spawned "son", the amalgam of human and Symbiote that goes by Carnage.

As Carnage Cletus Kasady has performed countless acts of depravity in the form of mass murder and mayhem, and has always found a way to cause more and more chaos with each ensuing encounter between himself and the various heroes of the Marvel U.  It was not until the resurgence of the forgotten hero The Sentry that Carnage's madness was seemingly put to a permanent end when The Sentry flew off into space with Carnage in tow and proceeded to rip the monster in half, leaving the remains floating in space and returning to Earth.  While the Sentry's actions were controversial among the inhabitants of the Marvel U, the fact that Carnage was gone for good did bring peace of mind to the many heroes especially Carnage's long time obsession Spiderman.

Unfortunately as any comic fan knows the worst villains never truly stay dead, and this has recently proved itself true yet again with the monster known as Carnage.  The newly released Trade Paperback entitled CARNAGE: FAMILY FEUD marks the return of the red Symbiote menace.  What kind of return this entails and how it comes about won't be revealed by me, but I will say that if you buy one Trade Paperback release this holiday season you had better make sure it's FAMILY FEUD.  The story is penned by Amazing Spider-Man Alumni Zeb Wells and illustrated/colored by former X-Force artist Clayton Crain, a team that this story proves is a match made in comic heaven!  Between the intricately weaved, break-neck paced story and the gloriously (and entirely computer designed/colored) artwork of Mr. Crain, FAMILY FEUD offers visuals and a plot that truly does justice to the Marvel Symbiotes.

I've been a long time fan of Venom, Carnage, and the handful of other Symbiotes that slink and slash their way through the darkest shadows of the Marvel U, and this story is by and large one of my all time favorites.  In short you should buy this collection, if for no other reason that to see a Symbiote the way Symbiotes are meant to be drawn courtesy of Mr. Crain.

Seriously. The art is a thing of macabre beauty. Check it out:

So with that, I'll let you run off to your nearest bookstore or comic purveyor and purchase this excellent piece of comic art. What are you waiting for? GET GOING!
